Printmaking Workshops

I have a small studio in a lovely location near Matfield in Kent, just off the A21. I’ve taught printmaking for the last five years, including teaching with Kent Adult Education, I also print professionally for other artists and am a technician in a busy London print workshop. My approach is to encourage everyone to give printmaking a go and enjoy getting lost in the process. All you’ll need to bring is an apron, packed lunch and enthusiasm!

Rye Creative Centre Workshops and short-courses

Introduction to drypoint and collagraph

In this focused one day workshop you’ll learn the principles of drypoint and collagraph printmaking. Enjoy the diverse results that can be achieved through very simple and direct techniques. You will scratch, mark and score into different surfaces, often using household items such as Tetra Pak and sandpaper. By the end of the day you’ll be able to ink, wipe and print a plate to create a variety of effects. You will also have the opportunity to experiment with building up further layers and adding colour to your prints. The techniques you’ll learn offer endless possibilities to producing unique prints.

This workshop is for both beginners and intermediate learners and can be adapted to suit your printmaking experience.

The classes will run 10.30am-4.00pm with a 30 minute lunch break. Maximum of 4 people (minimum of 3 to run)
Date: Friday 25th April
£90 per person

It includes two plates (approximately A5) and sundries.
Paper and extra plates will be available to purchase on the day.

Drypoint and Carborundum printmaking two day course

This printmaking course runs over two consecutive Friday’s. The first workshop will focus on drypoint techniques-literally scratching into the surface of the plate. You will experiment with two different surfaces, with the possibility of creating a multi-plate print to build up layers (depending on your experience). You will print an initial image to see what your mark-making has given you and have the opportunity to develop these marks. You will then learn various ways of applying carborundum (a gritty powder added to glue to create a rich black when inked and printed) to your plates. This needs to dry over the week before printing.
On the second Friday you will focus on printing the carborundum plates and developing your image through layering and the option to introduce coloured ink and chine collé (a method of including colourful paper) to your prints. The workshop is as much about enjoying the process of printmaking and learning new techniques as it is about creating beautiful prints. It’s suitable for both beginners and more experienced printmakers.

The classes will run 10.30am-4.00pm with a 30 minute lunch break. £180 for 2 weeks

Maximum of 4 people (minimum of 3 to run)
Dates:
Fri 21st & Fri 28th March
Fri 9th & Fri 16th May

It includes two plates (approximately A5) and sundries.
Paper and more plates will be available to purchase on the day.

An apron, old clothes and protective gloves are highly recommended as it can be a messy business. Don’t forget a packed lunch!
